Selon un mythe américain, le rocking chair aurait été inventé par Benjamin Franklin, bien qu'aucune note dans son autobiographie ne le prouve. Son origine provient plutôt d'Angleterre au cours du XVIIIe siècle.

Le nom Shaker vient de la manière expressive et bruyante dont ils pratiquaient leur religion. Ils furent persécutés en Angleterre et fuient donc vers l'Amérique où le mouvement prend une ampleur considérable. Ils créent des villages communautaires au sein desquels le célibat est obligatoire et la propriété privée abolie.

À son apogée, ils sont 6 000 membres dans 23 villages répartis dans différents États, de la Nouvelle-Angleterre (Maine, Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire, Connecticut) au Midwest (Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky). La plus grande communauté, lcelle de Mount Lebanon dans l'État de New York, abrite aujourd'hui le Shaker Museum, qui est le gardien de l'histoire du mouvement.
Leur mobilier a été révélé en Europe grâce à la publication d’un ouvrage de référence * ainsi qu’à l’exposition de la collection de mobilier de la communauté de Mount Lebanon dans le contexte de la foire internationale TEFAF à Maastricht à laquelle la galerie Downtown - François Laffanour a participé

Chef-d'œuvre de l'artisanat, ce mobilier minimaliste rarement mentionné dans l'histoire du design a été une forte inspiration pour le mobilier du XXe siècle, notamment scandinave. Il est d'autant plus remarquable qu'il est l'expression parfaite et rigoureuse des modes de pensée et de vie des Shakers.

Par exemple, le balancement des nombreux Slat back chairs permet de guider le regard vers les cieux.

À partir du XIXème siècle, le rocking chair commence à être fabriqué par des sociétés d'ameublement, notamment la maison Thonet Frères, inventeur du procédé pour courber le bois, et l'atelier de Duncan Phyfe, pionnier dans les meubles de style Empire à New York.Il constitue un objet typique fabriqué par la communauté protestante des Shakers ayant inspiré le designer Hans Wegner.

They were persecuted in England and therefore fled to America where the movement became widespread.
