L'hiver c'est le moment de la récolte pour Emmanuel Puybonnieux, dans son oseraie à Aixe-sur-Vienne, il cultive seul 50 000 pieds d'osier naturel. En Limousin, ils ne sont plus que 3 maîtres vannier à cultiver leur propre osier. Une profession qui fait partie des 281 "métiers d'art" recensés par l'institut national des métiers d'art. 

"Si on cultive pas notre osier on a plus les moyens d'en acheter. L’osier est devenu rare et cher, l'avantage de le cultiver, c’est qu’on a plus de choix quant aux dimensions et aux couleurs"

A côté des objets traditionnels de vannerie, dont les paniers, Emmanuel Puybonnieux travaille également l'osier vivant. Des sculptures végétales qui poussent et évoluent dans le temps. En gagnant des prix et des concours, ce maître Vannier s'est fait connaître des municipalités, mais c’est auprès des particuliers qu’il a du mal à valoriser son savoir-faire.

"La vraie vannerie a toujours été un peu onéreuse, je pense à ces paniers rustiques qu’avaient nos grands-mères, c’étaient pas des paniers donnés. Le panier à bois, où je passe une demi-journée dessus, je le vends 100 euros, c'est pas onéreux. Mais les clients ont pris l’habitude d’acheter des paniers à bois en jardinerie à 25 euros, à ce prix-là ça sert 2 fois, une 1ere fois pour transporter le bois, et la 2eme pour allumer le feu !"

Pendant les fêtes l’artisan-créateur-cultivateur a installé ses productions dans une boutique éphémère de Limoges. Il veut faire connaître son travail et remettre au goût du jour la fabrication des objets tressés en tiges végétales. Ce savoir-faire millénaire était connu des égyptiens, des gaulois et des celtes. Aujourd'hui, il se perd. Il n'y a que 250 maîtres vanniers en France, contre plusieurs dizaines de milliers le siècle dernier.

Alongside traditional basketry objects, including baskets, Emmanuel Puybonnieux also works with live wicker. Plant sculptures that grow and evolve over time. By winning prizes and competitions, this master basket maker has made a name for himself in the municipalities, but it is with private individuals that he has difficulty in making the most of his know-how: "Real basketry has always been a little expensive, I think of those rustic baskets that our grandmothers had, they were not given baskets. The wood basket, where I spend half a day on it, I sell it for 100 euros, it's not expensive. But customers have become accustomed to buying wood baskets in garden centres for 25 euros, at that price it is used twice, once to transport the wood, and the second time to light the fire! During the holidays the craftsman-creator-cultivator installed his productions in an ephemeral shop in Limoges.”

He wants to make his work known and to bring back to the forefront the manufacture of woven objects made of vegetable stems. This thousand-year-old know-how was known to the Egyptians, Gauls and Celts. Today, it is lost. There are only 250 master basket makers in France, compared to several tens of thousands in the last century.
