Cette forme de lampe réalisée à la poterie de Biot dans les années 50 est directement issue du répertoire classique des poteries provençales. Il s’agit d’une jarre de transport de l’huile, elle est en terre vernissée de couleur bleue unie, c’est une couleur qui dénote le caractère plus tardif de la production. Depuis le XVème siècle, les moines mendiants recueillaient dans ces jarres, pour les nécessiteux, une quantité d’huile que les familles seraient prêtes à donner selon leur conscience. Les passants latéraux avaient pour fonction de maintenir un cordage afin de les suspendre aux flancs des ânes pour le transport. L’objet prend ainsi le nom de « conscience » eu égard à la tradition du don qu’il évoque.
Le village de Biot, visin de Vallauris est intimement lié à l’activité potière dès le XVIème siècle et sa notoriété s’amplifie à la fin du XIXème siècle. Il est situé à proximité d’une « veine » d’argile réfractaire, celle du bassin de la Brague ayant conduit au développement d’une poterie culinaire puis, grâce à l’arrivée des « pionniers » dans le village de Vallauris, cette céramique utilitaire a pris un élan artistique phénoménal juste après la Seconde Guerre Mondiale. La manière dont les artistes ont appréhendé la poterie vernaculaire présente l’intérêt de questionner le lien entre l’art et l’art populaire. Au-delà des conflits personnels entre potiers indigènes et potiers migrants, cette identité de la poterie provençale est l’objet des recherches des très nombreux artistes-artisans actifs dans les années 50 dans le village de Vallauris. De la même manière, ces formes sont l’objet d’une mise en perspective de la poterie provençale au sein des traditions potières dans le monde. 

This form of lamp made at the Biot pottery* in the 1950s is directly from the classic repertoire of Provencal pottery. It is a jar for transporting oil, made of glazed earth of a plain blue color, a color that denotes the later character of the production. Since the 15th century, the mendicant monks collected in these jars, for the needy, a quantity of oil that the families would be ready to give according to their conscience. The side loops had the function of holding a rope in order to suspend them from the sides of the donkeys for transport. The object thus takes the name of "conscience" in view of the tradition of giving that it evokes.
The village of Biot, close to Vallauris, has been closely linked to pottery since the 16th century and its fame grew at the end of the 19th century. It is located near a "vein" of refractory clay, that of the Brague basin, which led to the development of culinary pottery and then, thanks to the arrival of "pioneers" in the village of Vallauris, this utilitarian ceramic took on a phenomenal artistic impetus just after the Second World War. The way in which artists have apprehended the vernacular pottery is interesting to question the link between art and popular art. Beyond the personal conflicts between native and migrant potters, this identity of Provençal pottery is the object of research by the many artists-craftsmen active in the 1950s in the village of Vallauris. In the same way, these forms are the object of a perspective of Provençal pottery within the pottery traditions in the world.
